Major destination is Waipio Valley Lookout, which allows tourists a look at a picture-perfect valley and coastal views. Guided tours or your 4x4 will take you into the valley where you can watch locals surf the rough ocean waters. Farther east along the Hamakua Coast, Akaka Waterfalls and Laupahoehoe Beach Park are tourist attractions. The area in and around historic plantation town of Honokaa offers very affordable vacation rentals, B&Bs or small hotels.
