The Kohala Coast on the Big Island features an abundance of tropical ocean life, which one can experience first hand when going snorkeling or scuba diving on any of our Kohala Coast beaches or with one of the Kohala Coast boat activities above. However, even for Kohala Coast visitors who are afraid of the ocean, there are plenty of opportunities of viewing lots of tropical sea life without having to scuba dive or snorkel.

Here are a few Kohala Coast resorts which gladly assist Big Island visitors in their search of learning more about Hawaiian islands tropical ocean life.

Four Season's Tropical Fish Pond - Fish Feeding in the afternoon

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel - Manta Ray Lookout at night

Kohala Coast visitors can get another free tour of the ocean life, specifically of Manta Rays, when staying or visiting Mauna Kea Beach Resort. At night time, a spotlight is directed at the ocean, the light attracts the plankton and hopefully, the Manta Rays will show up for their 'dinner' and their graceful ballet when catching their food of tiny plankton. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel reopened December 20th, 2008 for visitors. The spotlight for Manta Rays is switched on. Visit Mauna Kea Manta Ray Lookout at night which is the best time for viewing the Manta Rays.

The Kohala Coast offers plenty of miles along the shore line. On your beach walk, you will see sunbathing sea turtles at lots of places. If you are interested in learning more about sea turtles, tropical fish and how the ancient Hawaiians lived in this area plus viewing all kinds of these sea creatures like Sting Rays, baby sharks, jack fish, plan your beach walk on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday and join the 10:30 a.m. fish tour at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. You and your kids will love it.

On your way to Mauna Lani Beach Club - a beautiful small white sand lagoon, where you will find an abundance of tropical fish and even the above shown very shy Eagle Ray - stop at the ancient Hawaiian fish pond (see photo above on the right). Benches invite you to relax and sit down at the most peaceful setting between coconut plam trees and Hawaiian Noni trees. You will spot quite a number of fish in the pond plus eels and puffer fish when you are patient enough.

Kohala Coast Whale Watch

Last but least least, the Kohala Coast shorline offers plenty of opportunities for watching the Humpback whales during the winter months December - March. Best chances to see whales is, of course, from all the Kohala Coast beaches and when driving the road from Kawaihae Harbor to Hawi in North Kohala. When you see, people standing and pointing their fingers at the ocean, their is a big guaranty you will see some humpback whales breaching and playing in the ocean.
