Merrie
Monarch Hula Festival The 47th Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festifal
will take place in Hilo April 8 - 10, 2010. A week long festival
of cultural events including Hawaii’s most prestigious hula
competitions at Edith Kanaka’ole stadium. The stadium begins
with a Ho’olaule’a on Moku Ola (Coconut Island) on Easter
Sunday in Hilo with lots of music, food and fun. On Wednesday there
is a free hula exhibition night at the stadium that begins at 6:30pm.
Thursday is the solo Miss Aloha Hula competition, where each dancer
performs both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula `auana (modern
hula). Friday is the group Kahiki (ancient) and Saturday the Auana
(modern) hula competition. A grand parade takes place through Hilo

2010 PGA Mitsubishi Electric Golf
Championship at Hualalai takes place on January 24, 2010. This major
Big Island golf event is held at the Hualalai Resort Golf Club.

2010 celebrates the 14th Big Island
Marathon in Hilo starting at Hilo Bayfront on March 21, 2010. Run
along the ocean at one of the world's most scenic marathons, the

Lavaman Waikoloa takes place March
28, 2010. Not ready for the Big Island Kona Ironman, start with

Join Leilehua Yuen in this local's-eye-view
of Hawai'i Island each Wednesday in Hilo's historic Palace Theater.
Through traditional chant and storytelling, music, hula, and video
featurettes, Leilehua explores different facets of Hawai'i Island.
Topics and films change weekly as the program revolves around the
Hawaiian lunar calendar, and surprise guests and musicians often
appear. A few of the past guests are Mary Ann Lim, Keoki Kahumoku,
Leina'ala Lassiter, Diana Aki, and Stan Kaina. Sometimes there is
hula! The show also features Bob Alder on the theater's historic

by Kona historian Jean Greenwell on the holua at Keauhou, the battle

Weavers, hula dancers, kapa makers, storytellers and other practitioners
of traditional Hawaiian culture will meet with biologists, conservationists,
and horticulturists to explore their common passion for the native

have the opportunity to meet, talk, and learn with some of the foremost
practioners of Hawaiian arts, with many opportunities for making
cultural items to take home with them. This free event will take
place at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain

HI'UWAI - ANNUAL SALT WATER CLEANSE -
HONOKOHAU HARBOR

Everyone is invited to join Kumu Keala Ching and Na Wai Iwi Ola
Foundation for their yearly Hi'uwai (Salt Water Cleanse) at Alula
beach, just South of Honokohau Harbor. The ceremony will begin at
11:30 a.m. and will be followed by a potluck at the small park in
the same area. Everyone is invited to attend. Please bring a green
ti leaf, some rain water caught around your home and some Hawaiian
salt. Wear clothing that can be immersed in the water (bathing suit,
pareo, etc.). Drive out to the end of the road that leads into the
Honokohau Harbor, park, and follow the trail to the beach south
of the harbor entrance. Hi'uwai, the salt water cleanse, helps us
to focus on the new year ahead. As we look back on all the learning
that took place in our lives over the past year, we know that we
can learn from the past and carry that learning into the future.
We can also release thoughts and emotions that are no longer needed.

HILO TO VOLCANO 50K ULTRA MARATHON AND
RELAY

The beginning of 2010 brings an exciting running event to the Hilo
side of the Big Island. For those hearty runners who are looking
to go a little longer than your typical 5K, the Big Island Road
Runners present the Hilo to Volcano 31 mile (50K) Ultra Marathon
and Relay on January 23, 2010. At 6 a.m., individual runners completing
the entire distance will depart from Coconut Island in Hilo. At
6:30 a.m., the relay participants will start at the same location.
The runners will travel from Coconut Island to the Cooper Center
in Volcano. Each relay team will consist of 3 runners and all runners
must provide their own support vehicles. Additional questions can
be directed to Gregory Lum Ho at 808-987-5224. The cost for the
race is $30 and entries must be postmarked by January 8, 2010. Entry
forms can also be picked up and dropped off at the Big Island Running
