Merrie
Monarch Hula Festival The 47th Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festifal
will take place in Hilo April 8 - 10, 2010. A week long festival
of cultural events including Hawaii’s most prestigious hula
competitions at Edith Kanaka’ole stadium. The stadium begins
with a Ho’olaule’a on Moku Ola (Coconut Island) on Easter
Sunday in Hilo with lots of music, food and fun. On Wednesday there
is a free hula exhibition night at the stadium that begins at 6:30pm.
Thursday is the solo Miss Aloha Hula competition, where each dancer
performs both hula kahiko (ancient hula) and hula `auana (modern
hula). Friday is the group Kahiki (ancient) and Saturday the Auana
(modern) hula competition. A grand parade takes place through Hilo

2010 PGA Mitsubishi Electric Golf
Championship at Hualalai takes place on January 24, 2010. This major
Big Island golf event is held at the Hualalai Resort Golf Club.

2010 celebrates the 14th Big Island
Marathon in Hilo starting at Hilo Bayfront on March 21, 2010. Run
along the ocean at one of the world's most scenic marathons, the

Lavaman Waikoloa takes place March

Join Leilehua Yuen in this local's-eye-view
of Hawai'i Island each Wednesday in Hilo's historic Palace Theater.
Through traditional chant and storytelling, music, hula, and video
featurettes, Leilehua explores different facets of Hawai'i Island.
Topics and films change weekly as the program revolves around the
Hawaiian lunar calendar, and surprise guests and musicians often
appear. A few of the past guests are Mary Ann Lim, Keoki Kahumoku,

"Books are Building Blocks", which is designed to encourage
family literacy. Parents must attend the program with their children,

"SHERLOCK HOLMES & THE VOLCANO

Sherlock Holmes visited the Kingdom of Hawaii in November of 1890
for what was supposed to be a restful vacation. But while on the
Big Island, he was drawn into a mysterious calamity of madness and
murder with supernatural overtones that came to be known as "The
Volcano Horror". This original play by Hilo's own Hal Glatzer
will be performed over the first two weekends in March: at 7 p.m.

Hula, Hawai'i's sacred dance form, is the focus of Unukupukupu,
the performance entity of Hawai'i Community College's two-year degree
program. Unukupukupu's course of study engages in the active and
intrepid reclamation of hula as a sacred aesthetic vehicle for spiritual
transcendence. Under the direction of Dr. Taupouri Tangaro and Manaiakalani
Kalua, Unukupukupu learners will offer selections from more than
ten years of hula curriculae. This program includes sacred dances
from Hawai'i's volcano traditions - the hula Pele, the hula Kapo,

13th ANNUAL BIG ISLAND INTERNATIONAL MARATHON

26.2 Mile Marathon, 10.8 Mile Run & 3.1 Mile Fitness Run/Walk.
Run the coast of old Hawaii along the Pacific Ocean, through tropical
rainforests, past exotic waterfalls, and along black lava beaches
to finish at historic Hilo Bay Front. Run with elite runners in
a small running field. Start to mile 10 is a net downhill of 500
ft. with some hills in the first 8 miles and then fairly flat after
that. Hilo is located in one of the cooler lush areas of Hawaii,
which translates into good running conditions. Enthusiastic volunteers
cheer on the runners at well-stocked aid stations and at the finish

of Arts, in Dance from the University of California, San Diego,
she had also choreographed for the San Diego Opera, and performed
professionally with the Fern Street Circus, and San Diego's renowned

This tour benefitting the Kona Historical Society starts and ends
at Keauhou Bay and includes Kahalu'u Bay, Kealakekua Bay, and Honaunau
Bay, aboard the catamaran Fair Wind II, from 2-5 PM. Kama'aina resident
John Mitchell provides the fascinating historical narrative prepared
by Kona historian Jean Greenwell on the holua at Keauhou, the battle
of Kuamo'o, Kealakekua Bay, the battle of Mokuohai at Ke'ei, and
Pu'uhonua 'o Honaunau.Ê Sightings of whales and dolphins are
often an added treat. Reservations are $50.00 for KHS members and
$60.00 for non-members; KHS members will be asked to show their
